Fanny Crosby, 1873
Crosby became blind at six weeks of age. She was an American hymn writer of over 8,000 hymns, often using pseudonyms.
Hymnologist Hawn writes that Crosby had friendships with a number of US Presidents – Van Buren, Tyler, Polk and Cleveland – writing poems for them and impacting their spiritual lives.
ASSURANCE, Phoebe P. Knapp
Knapp wrote tunes for a number of Crosby’s hymns. The text of Blessed Assurance was inspired by a tune Knapp played for Crosby.
