TUNE
ST. COLUMBA, ancient Irish melody
Named after Saint Columba who brought Christianity from Ireland to Scotland in 563. The first association of the tune with the text can be found in “The English Hymnal” (1906).

TIDBITS
Sung at Charlotte Mason‘s funeral. It was also sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.

It is said that the last words of the author when he died where the 3rd stanza of this hymn:

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love He sought me,
And on His shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.
